How many fatal accidents involving cars do you need to hear about before you decide to hang up the keys to your car?

I see where you're coming from, but it's kind of a poor example. There isn't really a debate that motorcycles are less safe than cars, they just are. If the bike suddenly stops chances are you'll keep moving. In a car you have restraints, airbags, and crumple zones that you just can't get in a bike, unless you're talking about a BMW C1. Motorcycles are fun, but they come with inherent risks like many other fun things.

Sorry for your loss, Cletus. The loss of a friend, especially family, is tough, but life will go on and there are many others around you to love, and be loved by. Prayers for you and your family.

I worded that wrong.

Inattentive drivers in my area would pretty much kill me. It's a weekly occurrence that I have to swerve, brake, or pull some other type of maneuver to avoid crashing in DC rush hour traffic.

I'd probably only ride the bike on my favorite backroads which I know like the back of my hand, which would likely cause me to ride beyond my limits and eventually make a mistake because of overconfidence. Driving these roads is incredibly fun in my RWD car. I know exactly how to handle these roads in my RWD car. Riding a bike is a whole different game.

It's ok to feel low for a while. Stay at home, listen to some good music, cry a little (or a lot). Get it out of your system, and don't dwell on it. I'm really sorry, man. You've got another prayer coming your way.

I could talk all night about this (and most other times, I would try to convince you you could ride safely and have fun) but this isn't the thread to do it in. I'll just state that an attentive rider, wearing all the proper gear and riding a bike they can handle (don't get your license and buy a CBR1000RR) within their limits is pretty safe.

Kinja'd!!! AM3R > CRider
06/28/2014 at 00:26

Kinja'd!!!0

I understand. You'd probably be able to convince me too. I'll end this by saying I wouldn't be scared of the bike killing me, because my mother would kill me looooong before the bike would get a chance.

You example is just as poor, because in a crash a motorcycle reacts differently. Unless you're riding into a wall or an oncoming truck, that kind of accident just doesn't happen. If you're paying attention, you won't crash in that manner. I normally wear near $800 worth of protective gear (helmet, boots, body armor, protective pants ect...) and can take a pretty damn good hit to anywhere on my body without even feeling it.

Only if she could catch you! : )

ok,I have to say it... Take a MSF beginner riders course. It's easy, and will teach you how to operate the bike safely. They provide a bike and helmet for you. Here's a link to the website. If you do that, then you can decide if you want to buy a motorcycle. If not, you will still have the ability to ride any bike if you need to.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into that. Having a bike for short trips would be really convenient. I feel like after the course I'll feel much better about riding.

I just got in from riding, been out since 6:30... I'm so sorry to hear of your loss... Every time I hear of a fellow biker's loss I'm reminded to keep wearing my gear, ride within my and my equipment's limits, and most importantly, watch out for other vehicles on the road. All you all remember that too and keep being safe out there... We take enough risks just by riding a bike, minimizing them is only smart. Peace.

I know how overwhelming a loss can be. I know probably a lot of your family will be over, but if you can, lock yourself in your room with someone you love and sob your eyes out. Talk about it all with them and just take this as your opportunity to let it all out.

I'm sorry about your loss!

There's nothing I can do, but to share a bit about myself and maybe absorb some of your pain in that way.

My father was a keen biker, and besides from a few minor accidents he escaped a fatal crash once only because of his experience and - let's be honest - sheer luck.

A car pulled out into the street from the right overlooking my father and thus ignoring his right of way. By looking away from the car (experience!), my father managed to steer the bike slightly to the left. So he flew over the hood instead of crashing head on against the roof egde. Nonetheless he broke his arm and a few rips.

For us bereaved bikers seem to be selfish madmen because they obviously love their passion more than their families and friends.

Kinja'd!!!

Yet riding the bike - which he had to borrow from a friend after he had to sell his own - was my father's way to escape from his inner conflicts and the daily struggle to provide a good life for his wife and children.

In those precious moments I imagine he was free. It would've been very egoistical of us to take those away from him.

The pressures of his inner demons and financial turmoil were one of the reasons why he died of a heart attack a few years after said accident. He was only 52 years old.

So I mean it in the best possible way - although I don't know the circumstances - when I say:

This is all very fucked up, but your cousin died while doing what he loved. That has to count for something.

All the best to your family and his friends!
